Ernie Barnes

The Critic's Corner

2007

Ernie Barnes's paintings draw on personal memory to document the communities, gatherings, and shared spaces of Black everyday life. In this scene, a crowd is gathered outside a movie theater, seated and listening to a speaker, likely the "critic" named in the title. Figures of different generations fill out the composition; their bodies elongated and postures animated in his distinctive style.

Barnes's paintings, widely recognized and celebrated within Black American culture, offered an alternative to the mainstream narrative, bringing to life stories and spaces that were rarely seen in American art at the time.
