Dark of the Woods
1970In this painting created by Jeffrey Catherine Jones for the cover of Dean R. Koontz’s 1970 novel Dark of the Woods, one of the book’s main characters, Leah, is perched in an active stance at the top of a mountain. She is surrounded by a force field with faraway peaks and a large sky behind her, rendered in atmospheric washes of bright color. In the novel, a man from earth travels to a colonized alien world where he soon begins a romantic relationship with one of the planet’s last remaining inhabitants, the winged woman named Leah. While Koontz’s story is told entirely from the perspective of the man, Jones’s painting is focused on Leah. Where the author repeatedly described Leah as physically fragile, Jones depicts her as robust and commanding, reflecting the artist’s tendency to creatively divert from the source material she was tasked to illustrate.
